USR Alert: The Upper Saddle River Police is investigating two scams that occurred over the last 72 hours. These scams fit a common pattern involving the request for large quantities of cash or gift cards. The perpetrators of these crimes conducted ruses involving "a family member in trouble" or "impending legal action". The cash proceeds were picked up by suspected Uber drivers. Pictures of gift cards were sent to the perpetrators electronically via various messaging apps. Please remember the following; law enforcement agencies and government agencies will neither solicit bail payment over the phone nor will they request payment in the form of gift cards. Any residents with information regarding an attempted or successful scam is instructed to immediately call the Upper Saddle River Police Department.

A message to our followers, EMS & public safety partners. The Valley Hospital Ridgewood Campus, located at 223 North Van Dien Ave, Ridgewood, New Jersey 07450 will be on FACILITY DIVERT effective on April 11, 2024, starting at 3:00 pm. This divert will be effective until further notice. This is in anticipation of our hospital move to Paramus on April 14, 2024. All ambulances transporting a patient experiencing a medical emergency must be directed to the next closest, appropriate facility. Once the divert is updated, we will share the latest information when it is available. We would like to remind everyone that there will be NO disruption to our walk-in emergency care during the divert status.
On Sunday, April 14th, The Valley Hospital will be moving to Paramus. At 6:00 am on Sunday, April 14th, The Valley Hospital in Ridgewood will close, and the new Valley Hospital in Paramus will open.

STORM WATCH: ORANGE AND ROCKLAND UTILITIES RAMPS UP EMERGENCY CREWS TO REPAIR POTENTIAL STORM DAMAGE AS HEAVY RAIN AND WIND PREDICTED FOR THE REGION
PEARL RIVER, NY April 2, 2024, 1:30 pm – Orange and Rockland Utilities is preparing its emergency response crews to mobilize Wednesday late morning to repair potential damage and restore possible power outages that could result from a rain and windstorm, packing sustained winds of 10 to 25 mph, gusting as high as 45 mph. That storm is expected to arrive in the region about noon Wednesday and exit the area by around 10 p.m.
O&R company and contractor overhead line crews and tree removal experts, customer service operators and the other O&R emergency response personnel will be activated and deployed at 11 a.m. Wednesday morning. O&R has also acquired 50 additional overhead line contractors in preparation for the stormy weather and to aid in restoration.
O&R Warns
For safety’s sake, O&R warns the public not to touch or approach any downed wire. Assume the wire is energized and dangerous. Call O&R immediately toll-free 1-877-434-4100. Depending on the situation, you may also consider calling your local police to divert traffic from the downed wire’s location until an O&R crew arrives.

ORANGE AND ROCKLAND UTILITIES WARNS OF BILL PAYMENT FRAUD CALLS
PEARL RIVER, NY March 25, 2024 Noon --- Orange and Rockland Utilities (O&R) today warned its customers that crooks have launched a new round of predatory phone calls aimed at stealing O&R customers’ money.
This latest round of harassing phone calls started last week when O&R customers reported a rash of phone calls seeking payment for bogus O&R bills.
The scheme goes this way: Crooks posing as O&R employees call unsuspecting customers, inform them that their O&R account has been suspended for non-payment and that an O&R crew will be at their home in 15 minutes to disconnect their electric service.
That threat is quickly followed by a demand for immediate payment of the bogus bill balance by prepaid debit card. Customers who have challenged the crook’s report about the fraudulent bill, saying that they checked their account balance online during the phone call, are dismissed as incorrect. The crook then aggressively renews the demand for immediate payment until the customer agrees to pay or hangs up on the crook.
Here are two big reasons not to believe any crook who makes a shutoff threat:
• NO PREPAID DEBIT CARDS - O&R does not accept bill payment for electric and gas utility bills by Green Dot or any other prepaid debit cards. Never has.
• NO IMMEDIATE SHUTOFF - Disconnecting O&R electric or gas service for non-payment of bills involves a multi-step process – including written communications from O&R to the customer over a period of several days, or even weeks --- not hours. That process is regulated by the NYS Public Service Commission and NJ Board of Public Utilities.
Customer vigilance is key to fighting off these crooks. They never stop. In fact, a new scam was reported to O&R last week. A Rockland County customer said he had gotten a call from a crook purporting to be working for O&R. The crook said that the customer’s autopay account with O&R was not working. Further, the crook threatened to cut off the customer’s electricity if he did not immediately remedy the situation. How? The crook ordered the customer to call the crook’s “supervisor” on another phone number the crook supplied to the customer and re-enroll in autopay --- a task that would reveal the customer’s confidential personal financial information to the crook.
The customer wisely did not comply with the crook’s orders because the customer knew his autopay was working. If it weren’t, he knew that O&R would contact him by letter or email to notify him of the problem and craft a solution. The customer also knew if there were such an issue, there would be no threat of immediate service shutoff. He knew that any service shutoff for non-payment of bills by O&R requires days, if not weeks. of notice and attempts by O&R to help solve the problem without service interruption. And the customer knew that if the call from the crook were legitimate, the O&R supervisor would be on-site and the customer’s call would have been transferred to him or her.
So, if someone calls you, says they are an O&R employee and threatens to shut off your electric or gas service that day if a bogus bill is not immediately paid through a prepaid debit card, remember these tips:
Hang Up – Disengage so you’re not further subjected to the crook’s high-pressure “sales pitch.”
Text Scam – After you hang up on them, the more aggressive crooks will try to repeat their shutoff threat by texting you. Ignore the threat. They are crooks.
Don’t Hit “REDIAL” – The caller ID screen on your phone for the crook’s call may read “Orange and Rockland Utilities”, but that’s a hi-tech fake copy of the utility company’s number. That’s not O&R. Do not redial, and don’t call the number that the caller gives you to call them back. That will reconnect you to the crook. Block the crook’s number to prevent future harassing calls.
Fast Track - If you are unsure about whether you have an overdue balance on your O&R bill, the fastest way to find out is to log onto your account through //ORU.com/myaccount to review your latest account information. You also can call O&R’s automated phone system at 1-877-434-4100. Have your Orange and Rockland account number ready and follow the automated phone prompts to check your balance.
Check the I.D. - If you are contacted by someone in-person or on the phone who says they represent O&R and you wish to verify their identity:
* Either ask for their photo ID card, if they are at the door, or
* Get a call-back number if they are on the phone, and call O&R at: 1-833-460-7059 during business hours Monday – Friday 8 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. or 1-877-434-4100 O&R’s Customer Service Department off hours to verify their identity.
* O&R employees and vendors are trained to cooperate with this request and are happy to comply with an identity verification request.
Remember, if you are feeling threatened or otherwise uncomfortable about your security during the exchange, immediately report the incident to your local police department at 911.

St. Patrick’s Day is one of the deadliest days on our nation’s roads.
272 lives were lost in drunk-driving crashes during the St. Patrick’s Day holiday period (6:00 p.m. March 16 to 5:59 a.m. March 18) between 2017 and 2021.
Over the 2021 St. Patrick’s Day holiday period, 47 people were killed in drunk-driving crashes.
Year after year, the rate of impairment among drivers involved in fatal crashes is higher at night on St. Patrick’s Day.
In 2021, 41 of the 47 traffic fatalities involving an impaired driver during the holiday period occurred in the nighttime hours (6:00 p.m. to 5:59 a.m.). Still, 31 daytime fatalities in drunk-driving crashes occurred between 2017 and 2021 over the St. Patrick’s Day holiday period.

A 50 year-old male from Ramsey, New Jersey, was stopped on Lake Street for numerous motor vehicle violations. The male was subsequently arrested for driving under the influence. He was processed and released to a responsible individual.
A 26 year-old male from Brooklyn, New York, was stopped on Lake Street for operating a stolen motor vehicle. The passenger, a 63 year-old male, also from Brooklyn, New York, was found in possession of several false identifications. Both males were arrested, processed, and released on their own recognizance.
Officers responded to a motor vehicle accident on Sparrowbush Drive. As a result, the driver, a 29 year-old male from New City, New York, was arrested for driving under the influence. The male was processed and released to a responsible individual.
A 29 year-old male from Spring Valley, New York, was arrested for possessing a false insurance card after a motor vehicle stop on Lake Street. The male was processed and released on his own recognizance.
Officer investigated a suspicious male in the parking lot of a business located on Route 17. As a result, a 44 year-old male from Washington Township, New Jersey, was arrested for possession of crystal methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia. The male was processed and released on his own recognizance.

The Bergen County Prevention Coalition will be holding it's first Tobacco week of action this year From February 26th through March 1st. During this week we be visiting point of sale locations all around Bergen County providing merchant education and working with local health officers to ensure nicotine products are not available to underage individuals.
We Need Your Help!!!
Tobacco-Free NJ has recently released the new Tobacco Retail Audit Tool. This tool, of which the virtual version can be accessed through the QR code on the flyer, or the link here, is designed to be used at tobacco retailers. The tool collects data on compliance, with the information sent to New Jersey Prevention Network.
The virtual tool, accessed here, is a survey similar to what is on the flyer.
Anyone can use this tool! Concerned citizens, youth groups, public health professionals, and more, can utilize this audit tool throughout Bergen County and the state at large.
Tobacco retail audits allow data to be collected about what is happening in tobacco retailers in the community and use this information to educate the public, policymakers, and our youth about the deceptive marketing tactics that are used by the tobacco industry. The point-of-sale audit tool is a store assessment to track the sales of tobacco products such as menthol flavored products, e-cigarettes, and potential illegal sales of flavored e-cigarettes in New Jersey. The audit tool also collects data on point-of-sale advertising, marketing, and promotions that are done by tobacco retailers. The tool can also be used to identify gaps in Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT) inclusion in stores and assess density and proximity of retailers that can impact the exposure and availability of tobacco products to youth. The purpose of this audit tool is solely for data collection and to identify where Tobacco-Free for a Healthy NJ can focus their educational efforts.
The audit also includes a merchant education component, supplying retailers with the information on IDing, as well as informational stickers and brochures.

STORM WATCH: ORANGE AND ROCKLAND UTILITIES OBTAINS ADDITIONAL CREWS AS FORECAST PREDICTS NOR’EASTER WITH HEAVY SNOW, GUSTY WINDS TONIGHT
PEARL RIVER, NY February 12, 2024, 2:00 pm – Orange and Rockland Utilities has obtained additional overhead line crews as the company prepares to mobilize its emergency response workforce to repair potential damage and restore possible power outages that could result from a nor’easter, packing heavy, wet snow and gusty winds. That storm is expected to start roaring through the region just after midnight tonight and tapering off Tuesday afternoon.
The snow totals predicted for that storm have increased from earlier reports and are now expected to blanket the region with as much as 4 to 10 inches of heavy, wet snow. Wind gusts could be as high as 35 mph.
O&R company and contractor overhead line crews and tree removal experts, customer service operators and the other O&R emergency response personnel will be activated and deployed early Tuesday morning. Also, O&R has secured approximately 200 mutual aid workers, which will substantially increase the size of O&R’s overhead line field forces.
O&R Warns
For safety’s sake, O&R warns the public not to touch or approach any downed wire. Assume the wire is energized and dangerous. Report the downed wires to O&R immediately toll-free 1-877-434-4100. Depending on the situation, you may also consider calling your local police to divert traffic from the downed wire’s location until an O&R crew arrives.
How to Report an Outage
If you experience a power outage, don’t assume that O&R automatically knows about it. You can report it and check to see when your lights will be back on through:
• Report an Electric Service Problem | Orange & Rockland (oru.com) from any computer or web-based mobile device.
• O&R mobile app from your iPhone, iPad, or Android device --- download via Apple Store or Google Play.
• Text messaging by texting “OUT” to 69678 (myORU) or
• Call 1-877-434-4100.

Restoring Service
Once the weather clears enough to safely assess damage and begin electric service restoration, O&R crews will give priority to clearing downed wires blocking roads and making repairs to critical and emergency facilities (police and fire stations, and hospitals, for example) and to those locations where the repair will provide power to the largest number of customers as quickly as possible. Then, crews will restore smaller outages and individual customers’ outages.
Important Safety Tips
• For safety’s sake, don’t touch or approach any downed wire. Assume it is energized and dangerous. Call O&R immediately toll-free 1-877-434-4100. Depending on the situation, you may also want to call your local police to divert traffic until an O&R crew arrives.
• Maintain a distance of at least 50 feet from downed wires and anything they are in contact with including puddles of water and fences. Supervise your children so that they are not in the vicinity and keep pets on a leash or otherwise secure.
• If a fallen wire is draped over a car, do not approach the car to make rescue attempts. Remain a safe distance away and try to keep the occupant of the vehicle calm. If possible, emergency personnel should handle the situation.
• Pole-top transformers --- those small, grey-colored metal drums attached to the wires at the tops of most utility poles --- also should be avoided when they have been knocked to the ground.
• Portable generators pose a serious hazard if used improperly. They should be used and installed according to the manufacturer’s instructions. A wrong connection could feed electricity back through the lines and endanger our repair crews. Never plug a generator into a wall unit, use it indoors or set it up outdoors near open home windows or air-handling vents.
• Have emergency equipment within reach --- portable radio, flashlights, spare batteries, first aid kit, cell phone and important medications. Keep O&R’s toll-free number 1-877-434-4100 near the phone to report power outages.
• Remember: if the base station of your cordless phone plugs into the wall, your phone will be unusable during a power outage.
How To Prepare Your EV for A Power Outage
Just as is the case with traditional gasoline vehicles, you need to ensure your electric car is fueled up in the event there is a power outage that lasts longer than expected.
Guidance is to always keep your EV charged between 75-90% in case of an emergency.
While EVs don’t need a gas station, they do need to be charged up, which is easily done at home. All EVs come with a plug and adapter that are compatible with the outlets in your garage or outside your house. Furthermore, there are Level 2 chargers available for your home. These charge your vehicle at a higher rate than a regular outlet because they use 220 volts, just like what a clothes dryer uses.
Can’t charge at home? Take your vehicle to a publicly accessible Level 2 or DCFC Fast Charger.
